France and America

Just a short note. Who cares about all those kings and queens. I must be dense, but I understand if you dislike the US, and I understand the pros and cons about Iraq. But Kings and queens?

I'm an American who is also Russian Orthodox. I don't know where people get their information about my church, but we never exploited anyone. The pogroms at the end of the 19th and early twentieth century was perpetrated by eastern rite Catholics. Politics were a conscience the last tsar was an inept ruler. Enough about Russia, the Orthodox have an ancient tradition of freedom of conscious and respect. That is why tsarist Russia invited the persecuted Amish Mennonites free land in the far eastern frontier and gave them the option to serve as forest rangers instead of serving in the armed forces. If you took the time to talk to the Russian-Americans, you would be surprised to learn how much they love this country. I'm a convert to Orthodoxy, as is a large portion of our membership. Though I have major differences with Republican party, I still love America. If it is really as bad Europeans think it is here; why is our most on going problem is illegal immigration. Everyone wants to move here. Also after they get in, they don't want to leave. They use all kinds of tricks to stay . That Green card is sold for thousands of dollars,fake ones of course. As for the churches here, we have the first amendment of the constitution promises freedom of religion. Also, not all Christians, you know, church goers, are Republicans, remember Dukakis, he was a Greek American and orthodox. France is a very complex country; you just can't put the French into little boxes. So too is America,we come from countries throughout the world, which is reflected in our collected culture. I and most of the people I know, don't want "loyalty" from France,just a little respect. We,in America, also have a little respect for others too. Running around saying "The United States is the best country in the world" and having popular TV and radio personalities using this like an oath of patriotism, doesn't help matters. I love America, we are free. But freedom not exercised gives power to the wrong people. Only around 60% on of those eligible to vote do in presidential elections. Those who don't vote shouldn't complain. Not even half of this country are evangelicals. The liberals don't vote,neither do other smaller parties, if they got together and voted for issues we all agree on, things would change. I love America first, France second!

I realy do not believe that the way that the United States went to war with Iraq was a good way of going about a war! The US Senate and Senators Leach and them realy dont seem like they are any better at taking care of the country.They are about free trade when I want the Factories.War is not a way to be supported.When you go to war you do not go straight after the palace like they did to Saddam they go on the ground after the army men.It is always army men only in wars.YOU NEVER GO AFTER THE KING AND THE PALACE.That is what the senate did they said it was operation Iraqs FREEDOM.They think if they take out the leader then the country will be a free democracy.It is just wrong and must be stopped.That is whay they lost their NUKES out of the war to save the king and palace for peace.Not for Russias stupid revenge on their own American Russian family loss.That is why it is up to you to protect and save all royal familys in the World RIGHT NOW. It is vidaly important because The seante is after them all because they have a drug indused idea to free the entire world.That is the wrong way but not to them they dont care they just want to win.They want to whole world to be free democracy.I feel very responsible and want the senate taken out! I am inclined to agree that Americans are hypocrites. This has been a problem since the founding of the Republic in 1776. You can see it most commonly in the area of nuclear weaponry. Well, after a second reading of my own post, I realise that I forgot something important that enforced anti-americanism in France in 1967 : The Viet-Nam war, which was impopular in France :
- Viet-Nam was a former french colony and seeing the USA involving into it had not been seen in a good way.
- At that time, communism was also popular amongst the students, and particulary Maoism (French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre was backing up this movement at that time). A war against communist forces was so condamned by a strong minority of the french population.

Well, I propose my translation, which is only a bad "technical" one : no rhymes... Just to understand the meaning of that song. For sure I have made mistakes, that's why I would appreciate another translation from another participant of this forum.

Pug2 - I just hope you will understand the lyrics of that song that was boycotted on its time. Unfortunatly I don't know that much English to translate it in a right way... (ust a clue for you if you don't know it : the "ricains" is an abbreviation for "américains" with a bit of irony.)

Oh, don't worry about your french teacher. I've read some posts here written in french by supposed teachers , and they were making as much mistakes as I do in english...see...The most important is to try. just look at the penpals forum, and you'll see that you've no shame to have about your french.

No, I don't speak very much French. I wish I did because I have always had a great love of France. I studied Frence and I don't think my instructor was fair to me, she kept saying I was speaking French with a southern assent. The FrenchI do knoiw I learned from listening to Jacque Brel. I just love his music,when he died the world lost one of it's greatest singer and songwritet. Not to mention the fact that he translated "Man of La Mancha" and then played the lead on stage. If ther were any way I could learn French and even live abroad in France for a while, I would, but I don't have the money to do such a thing. Linda
