looking for accommodation in marseilles

SalB - sounds fabulous! I love that area of Paris... There is a wonderful Turkish restaurant across from Notre Dame that your post jogged my memory of... I can't remember the name, but if facing Notre Dame, it is right across the bridge on the right! Fantastic Hummus, and very nice waiters/staff!

holmgirl15, The last time in Paris we stayed at Hotel de la Sorbonne (found on this France.com web site hotel search) and it was really nice. It's in the Latin Quarter across from the University of the same name. It's an easy walk to three Metro and two RER stations and a couple blocks from the Luxembourg Gardens. You can walk to Notre Dame, Cluny Museum, the Louvre, d'Orsay, St. Germain . . . you name it. It's a great location and a single is 60 euros, double is 80 euros. Private bath with hair dryer and all the little shampoo and soap things you need. The staff all spoke English (in varying degrees) and were really helpful.

The thing I liked best was the location. You might consider it for your next trip. I've also noticed a hotel called Le Manufactur on this web site as a featured hotel that is very inexpensive. I have no idea what it's like nor where it is because I haven't looked but it was very inexpensive.

One of the things we've always liked about Paris compared to many other famous tourist cities, is that rooms are pretty inexpensive.

Monojah - How was the neighborhood around your Paris hostel? Parts of Montmartre have scared me in the past.

For a little more, I have stayed in the Bastille area at the Hotel Ibis Bastille. They sometimes have weekend rates for 75-80 euro a night w/ a great breakfast included every morning. I found it very reasonable (well, back when the Euro was 85 cents!), and it's a pretty nice area. It seemed to be right in the middle of where we wanted to go...

but 20 euros a night sounds fab!

Thank you. I didn't realize there were hostels that inexpensive. The ones I've looked at cost nearly the same as a cheap hotel.

We're in our 60s and past the hostel stage, but I think they're a great idea for the more adventurous. (We were actually adventurous once!)

Ok, I won't keep it a secret. In Paris I stayed at 'Woodstock Hostel' (Montmartre, really good location though it can be pretty noisy), in Nice 'Chez Patrick', really clean and in a good location. Remember that these are hostels so don't expect too much, but both these places are really ok. I found them through Pascal guide to France and I truly recommend it! take care!

Hi. Welcome back. Wow, that's a really low budget. You will have a little trouble. I hope the hostels are in your price range. Have you considered renting a gite? That's about the least expensive way I know to get a place to stay. You usually have to stay a full week and they can be pretty far out in the country, but some are near or in town. It might be worth checking. The web address is http://www.gites-de-france.fr/fr/index.htm and you can click on the little British flag at the top if you want the site in English.

I assume you know this, but the section of the country you want is the Bouches de Rhone department. You may have to do a bit of searching but you will find something. If you have a friend to split costs with you, it would really help. The gites are usually entire houses and often have several bedrooms so you could bring a couple friends if you wanted.

Hi! Sorry for the delay but I was away for a few days. The price range I can afford is something between 15-20 euros. And actually I decided it doesn't have to be Marseilles but just any bigger city in the south. From today I'm starting to look seriously because I'm thinking of going in early August. Hi, monojah. I think the links you just got from France.com are their own. I didn't click and check. You can also get to them by clicking on the blue and red France.com at the top of this page. This will take you to the home page. Then, on the right side of your screen the second button is Hostels. Click on that to find the hostels.

On the top left of the Home Page right under the search button is another button marked Hotels. Click on that and do a search for 2 star or small hotels. Some are very reasonable.

We've reserved hotels on this site for years and never had a problem, so I highly recommend them.

Another place to check if you don't find anything here is the Lonely Plant web site. Their forum is called The Thorn Tree and there are lots of backpackers and students who can tell you their experiences. It might be a good place to get information even if you get your reservations here.
