salle d'eau versus salle de bains

I've never encountered the term "salle d'eau" before. How does this type of facility differ from a bathroom/salle de bains?

Even I wasn't here in 1920. What was different then? . . . or is it just an antiquated expression?

salle de bains is just a regular bathroom.

salle d'eau is if you live in 1920.

The "water room" as opposed to the "bathroom." Curious. I would assume they are the same thing but I suppose a water room might not have a bathtub or shower in it. Perhaps a wash room like our half bath?

Hopefully, one of our French friends will log on and explain this.

salle d'eau versus salle de bains

Salle d'eau in newly appartment refers to a bathroom with a shower and not a bath actually. Today, you often find a first bathroom and then a "salle d'eau". It is not from the begining of the 20th century. Cheers, Cyrille.
